Day 11- Last Full Workday

Today’s the last full day of work in the camp. I’ll have a partial day of work before the driver arrives from Ulan Bator tomorrow afternoon. I’m hoping to get into Ulan Bator a bit early so I can do my laundry, clean myself up, and maybe look around a bit, if time permits.

It’s colder today than yesterday. It’s funny how the weather temperature fluctuates at this time of year. When I first arrived in the camp I could wear just my grey sweatshirt outside as it was about 10C/50F. I’m guessing its about 1C/34F today. I never mentioned it before, but my daily wear has been:

  • Mountain climber grade thermal long sleeve shirt
  • T-shirt
  • Grey Athletic sweatshirt
  • Heavy Jacket
  • Baseball hat with keffiyah (desert style multi-use cloth)
  • Jeans
  • Modern nomad boots purchased in Ulan Bator.

We again picked up the horses this morning on motorcycle. There were three horses today, and I found out later the 3rd one is being trained or “broken’ as we’d say in the USA. I wandered upon some dead livestock walking the horses back to the Ger. You can be in the most seemingly remote area out here, but still find evidence of animals like bones, dung/droppings, or carcasses like these:

We finished up the usual goat sorting this morning. Today’s breakfast was a very typical dish called “Bantan”. It is a porridge made with flour, bread crumbs and bits of meat. It is a nomad staple, very easy to cook and a convenient way to use the previous nights leftovers:bantan

I had more spare time than usual in the afternoon, so I studied some Mongolian language regarding time, and useful phrases that I’m hoping will get me to the airport in time the day after tomorrow. I learned the driver (Amma) is supposed to arrive at noon, but it doesn’t seem seem like time means a lot in the nomad environment.

As the last days wind down, I’m reflecting on my time here. It’s been a great experience so far, and the biggest challenge has been just to get used to being without thing we take for granted like plumbing, electricity and urban infrastructure in general.

I can’t really say I’m missing that much. I am looking forward to a warm shower and in the midst of all this cold for some reason I am craving Ice Cream! I can’t remember the last time I ate Ice Cream in the USA. X-D For some reason this trip has made me crave things I haven’t even thought about in years.
